ISG has secured the job to repurpose an unremarkable grey building on London’s famous Kensington High Street into a landmark commercial office and retail scheme.
The corner plot next to Kensington High Street Tube station is now known as the Boots building but was formerly home to the renowned Pontings building – one of the original trio of iconic department stores in the area.
The building was acquired three months ago by AshbyCapital, the property investment advisory company, from Columbia Threadneedle Investments.
To speed the construction programme by six months, ISG will retain part of the existing structure and construct two extra floors to double the current volume of office space.
Designed by architect Pilbrow & Partners, the new building will be clad with pale white brick and Portland stone. At ground level the building restores the historic street line and introduces new retail arcade.
Steven McGee, managing director, of ISG’s Construction South business, said: “This complex scheme has been meticulously planned to maximise the potential for the site, while reducing impact on the local community, businesses and key transport links.
The decision to retain, reconfigure and extend, rather than demolish the existing 1970s building, has also significantly reduced the project programme and showcases the benefits of close collaboration between all project stakeholders to innovate and seek the best possible outcomes.”
