New NASC president to promote members’ safety excellence

New NASC president Des Moore is launching a crusade to promote the use of member scaffolding firms in tender documents among industry clients and main contractors.

Moore aims to launch a campaign to raise the profile and promote the use of NASC members for all projects both large and small.

He said: “We need to engage with the construction industry more to promote the benefits of using NASC members.”

The NASC now has set up a new marketing committee to promote members commitment to safety and best practice in the industry driven by its TG20:13 guidance for scaffolding systems.

Moore stressed the trade body carried rigorous audit processes, setting high standards for entry and retention of membership.

“The confederation has a proud record of improved accident statistics over very many years, which had helped to save lives and livelihoods.”

During his inaugural speech, Moore who is the chief executive of £100m revenue TRAD Group, set out his other key objectives for his two-year term.

To promote and publicise excellence in the industry the NASC has set up a project of the year award.

The inauugral award went to Interlink Scaffolding (Birtley, Tyne and Wear) for its work on the New Wear Crossing, Sunderland.

The project involved fitting cantilevered scaffolds to the A-frame pylon and bridge deck for installation of the tensioned stay cables

‘Interface with the client’ was one of the key criteria for judging the entries, and in this respect the submission from Interlink scored highly.

The judges were also extremely impressed by the degree of off-site preparation prior to erection of the bridge structure, complete with scaffolding.

He said it was important for the NASC to strike the right balance between the needs of large and small companies

The voice of smaller companies should be heard and their contribution recognised, but he cautioned that the importance of larger members to NASC membership should never be under-estimated.

Moore said the NASC would continue to evolve and would aim to help companies to get better at what they already did by being more responsive to the needs of members and communicating clearly and vigorously on all fronts.

He urged all members create and expand mentoring and training schemes for all categories of staff.

Moore added this should include encouraging and mentoring more women into senior positions in the NASC and the wider industry.

He said that at TRAD women had been encouraged and mentored and had gone on to excel in senior positions such as surveying and estimating, supervision and contracts management, and were now represented at board level.

Moore then congratulated Lynn Way of Chris Sedgeman Scaffolding, and Chair of the NASC South West and South Wales region, on her appointment to the role of vice president at the NASC AGM.

“This is a significant step forward in a predominantly male organisation, and I hope it will trigger greater involvement by women on the many and various NASC standing committees and working groups,” he added.
