Laing O’Rourke wins £70m Oxford Uni biochem project

The University of Oxford has picked Laing O’Rourke to deliver the £70m phase two expansion of its acclaimed biochemistry building.

The initial building was completed back in 2008 by Laing O’Rourke. This time around the firm was up against Mace and BAM to secure the follow on phase 10 years later.

The university has stuck with Hawkins Brown as architect but switched M&E designed to Hoare Lea and structures design to Pell Frischmann this time.

Work on the £70m project is expected to get underway in June and complete in 2020.

Laing O’Rourke will deliver the same envelope design as phase one with the challenge of matching existing finishes.

The internal plan layout of phase 2 has changed substantially from phase 1 with wet labs now located in the core of the building and write-up and teaching rooms now located around the perimeter.
