Crossrail action intensifies as sparks call “indefinite strike”

Industrial action by Crossrail electricians has moved into its second week as the sparks set up a strike fund for supporters to back their protest.

Around 60 M&E workers for Crown House at the Tottenham Court Road site “cabined-up” last Wednesday after claims the company was refusing to recognise their shop steward and tried to move him onto another job.

Electricians staged another protest on Friday and refused to go into work again yesterday with fuurther action due today.

The Enquirer understands the demonstration yesterday led to a confrontation between a Unite union official and a site manager.

One site source said: “The mood has turned really ugly down there and things look like they are going to get worse.”

The latest incident comes as workers push for a finishing bonus on the job.

A Laing O’Rourke spokesperson said: “Laing O’Rourke can confirm that discussions are ongoing at our Tottenham Court Road site between management and site workers.

“These discussions are taking place in private and therefore it would be inappropriate to comment further.”

Another site source added: “In the red corner you’ve got Len McCluskey of Unite and in the blue corner Ray O’Rourke.

“I almost feel sorry for Crossrail if those two get into a proper scrap.”
