Sparks set to blockade Crossrail site

Angry electricians are attempting to blockade a Crossrail site this morning as an industrial relations dispute on the job threatens to escalate.

The 6o sparks staged a protest on Wednesday at the Tottenham Court Road site when they “cabined-up”.

They returned to work yesterday but planned renewed action Friday morning as relations deteriorated  with Laing O’Rourke subsidiary Crown House.

The electricians claim the company has failed to recognise its union site representative and tried to move him onto another job.

London regional construction officer Harry Cowap said: “The workers are angry and will be showing they can’t be pushed around by blockading the site.”

The Employment Relations Manager at Crown House is former Unite national officer Brian Boyd.

Site sources predict the dispute could quickly escalate as M&E workers push for a completion bonus on the project.

A Laing O’Rourke spokesperson said: “Laing O’Rourke can confirm that discussions are ongoing at our Tottenham Court Road site between management and site workers.

“These discussions are taking place in private and therefore it would be inappropriate to comment further.”
