Historic South Yorkshire builder George Hurst & Sons has called in administrators threatening around 60 jobs losses.
The £13m building firm, which was founded in 1860, is now in the hands of administrator Begbies Traynor’s Sheffield office.
Up to 60 staff worked for the firm which specialised in local authority, schools and NHS work in the region.
Recent clients included Sheffield Primary Care Trust, Barnsley hospital and Humberside and west Yorkshire police.
The firm had also benefited from the move to include smaller local firms on national frameworks, securing places on the Pagabo, Reallies and EN Procure preferred contractor panels.
Since it was formed 157 years ago, the Hurst Company has been passed from father to son – and daughter on one occasion during WWII – until a management buyout was completed in 2008.
Originally offering plumbing and sanitary engineering services to families and businesses in the Swinton area, it expanded to operate across all of Yorkshire.
Despite its size, Hurst’s was one of only 16 contractors in the UK to be accepted onto the CITB backed National Federation of Builders BIM Exemplar Programme.
Its efforts were rewarded with recognitions as a BIM 2 ready exemplar company.
