Contractor Osborne has secured the £4.4m contract to build a bridge over the river Mersey in Stockport.
The 40m single span bridge represents the first phase of Transport for Greater Manchester’s plans to build the £41m Stockport Interchange.
The bridge will link Astley Street on the north side of the river with Swaine Street to the south, enabling bus services to be re-routed through the town centre, while also improving access to the interchange.
Works for the bridge and associated highways are expected to start in April 2018 for completion by December 2018. WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff is consulting engineer for the scheme.
Engineering consultancy WSP’s Manchester office was appointed by Transport for Greater Manchester and Stockport Council to progress the redevelopment of the town’s bus station at Daw Bank into a £41m transport interchange earlier this summer.
Bids will be invited for this main element of the project next year with a view to contract award next autumn.
