Buckingham Group wins site prep for £500m energy plant

Buckingham Group Contracting has bagged the site preparation package for a £500m energy recovery facility in North London.

North London Waste Authority is planning a major 10-year building programme.

This involves construction of the new facility in the Lee Valley in  Edmonton to replace the existing 45-year-old waste incinerator.

Preparatory works will include installing works accommodation for the team on designated areas of Lee Valley Regional Park and preparing the laydown area to provide space to support construction onsite.

The works have been scheduled to take place over the next 10 years and have been phased to allow the existing EfW facility to continue to operate during this time.

Plans also include building a new reuse and recycling centre, as well as EcoPark House, an office block with a visitor reception centre.

The existing plant will be demolished in 2025 when the new energy recovery facility is operational.

When complete it will be capable of incinerating 700,000 tonnes of non-recyclable residual waste every year and produce 50 megawatts of electricity, enough to power 127,000 homes.

It is estimated the £500m project could save up to £900m over 27 years.

Chair of NLWA, Cllr Clyde Loakes says, “This is a momentous time for North London Waste Authority. The Project is pivotal for creating a more efficient solution to our waste that will better serve our residents. We are excited to start putting plans into action for a sustainable future of waste in north London.”
