Cleveland Bridge lands Humber Bridge refurb

Steelwork contractor Cleveland Bridge UK has secured the job to refurbish the Humber Bridge, the record-breaking single-span suspension bridge it helped to construct more than 40 years ago.

The Darlington-based specialist will act as principal contractor carrying out planned main cable inspection and repair.

Cleveland will employ a 300-strong team on the project over the 12-month contract.

The project win comes as Cleveland Bridge seeks to grow its presence in the bridge rehabilitation and upgrades market, growing its team and actively targeting refurbishment and renewal projects across the UK.

Acting alongside their project manager Aecom, Cleveland Bridge UK will undertake the inspection of eight main cable panels, which each measure 18 metres in length.

In addition, Cleveland Bridge UK will also deliver inspection, cable material sampling, sample preparation and associated laboratory works, which will be undertaken by its partner Cowi.

Chris Droogan, managing director of Cleveland Bridge UK, said: “As one of the main partners in the construction of the Humber Bridge, I am really pleased that we can again apply our experience and expertise to ensure the extension of the lifespan of this vital and impressive piece of infrastructure.”
