A digger pulled up an 11,000 volt power cable at Crossrail’s site at Connaught bridge plunging the local London Royal Docks area and Newham Council’s offices into darkness for eight hours.
A large swathe of E16 including the University of East London, a Hilton and Premier Inn hotel were hit by the power cut on Tuesday.
The digger operator on site escaped unhurt and a full investigation is now being undertaken by main contractor Balfour Beatty .
A Crossrail spokesman said: “During ground excavation works near Connaught Bridge on 5 October, a cble was struck.
