Go-ahead for £75m student scheme in Cardiff

Mace Developments has been granted planning consent for a new £75m student accommodation scheme in Cardiff.

Construction will begin next year on the Glossop Halls project which will see the former West Wing of Cardiff Royal Infirmary demolished and replaced with 644 student rooms.

David Grover, COO for Mace Developments, said: “The current availability of private sector student accommodation in Cardiff is generally considered below expected standards, so in delivering circa 650 new student accommodation beds, this scheme will also help reduce student demand for private housing in the area – a strong local authority preference.”

The development is located in the evolving student quarter of Cardiff, a short walk from the university’s main campus and student union.

Designed by The Kalyvides Partnership, Glossop Halls will be up to 10 storeys at its highest point comprising of 181 studios, 453 clusters and 10 apartments.

Residents will also benefit from a multi-media room, yoga room, gym, library and study space. In addition, two retail units will serve students and the public.

Mace Developments is forecast to have the building ready for occupation ahead of the 2019/20 academic year.
