Plans have been approved to redevelop a complex of derelict grade-II listed Victorian mill buildings on the River Calder in Wakefield into a new arts centre.
The plans drawn up by architect Hawkins/Brown will see nine 19th century buildings turned into a mixed-use creative quarter for music, film, TV, design and new media.
Developer City & Provincial Properties in partnership with Wakefield Council aim to create a ‘northern extension’ of their media type hub – Tileyard Studio in central London.
The £80m redevelopment plan includes construction of new external stairs and lift cores, repairs and alterations to a damaged chimney to create new sculptural steel lattice replicating its former size.
A total of 32,000 sq ft of space will be created in new buildings built in brick alongside the mill buildings with structural engineering provided by Structural & Civil and M&E design by Hulley and Kirkwood.
Work is set be completed in phases from 2019 to 2022.
