Worker rescued after 6-hour ordeal in trench collapse

A construction worker is recovering after a 6-hour ordeal trapped at the bottom of a 5m deep trench in a road in Harrogate,

Fire and rescue services were called to site at Rossett Green Lane after the trench collapsed just before 9am on Friday morning trapping the worker under clay and Tarmac at the foot of the deep hole.

The works were part of a housing development at the location.  Gas and electricity suppliers were called in to isolate supplies in the area during the rescue attempt.

Specialist teams from West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service and ambulance teams worked in ‘extremely arduous conditions’ for most of the day before finally freeing the man an at 3.30pm.

The fire service said the man, who was buried up to his waist in very tight conditions, was largely uninjured by his ordeal and said to be walking after being rescued from the trench.
