Amey extends overhead line upkeep deal

Amey is helping Northern Powergrid safeguard power to homes across the North East, Yorkshire and northern Lincolnshire after it secured a £40m framework with the electricity distributer to carry out overhead line condition surveys.

The four-year framework will see Amey carrying out condition surveys, cutting back overgrown vegetation and trees to prevent them disrupting electricity supplies.

The company has a long-standing relationship with Northern Powergrid and has been delivering vegetation management in the North East for the last five years.

The new framework will see Amey continuing to deliver these services in the North East as well as extending its presence into Yorkshire and northern Lincolnshire.

Andy Milner, chief executive at Amey, said: “The framework further strengthens our position as a trusted partner in the power sector, and we look forward to continuing our longstanding partnership with Northern Powergrid.”

Steve MacDonald, Head of Programme Delivery at Northern Powergrid, said: “Clearance of vegetation from our 800 miles of overhead power network helps reduce the potential for trees making contact with our power lines during severe weather or snapped branches hitting our network causing damage and power cuts for our customers.

In addition to vegetation management, Amey delivers a number of services for Northern Powergrid, these range from overhead line refurbishment, which includes including maintaining steel towers and wooden poles, to carrying out electrical and civil engineering activities on substations.
