38 jobs axed as Scottish borders builder fails

Galashiels-based housebuilding and contracting business Murray & Burrell has been placed into administration triggering 38 redundancies.

The privately-owned builder was established nearly 90 years ago and developed small housing sites, and delivered anything from extension to steel framed buildings for commercial and retail uses in the borders and Lothian region.

Thomson Cooper partner Richard Gardiner has been appointed as administrator of the business which has now ceased trading. At least 15 subcontractors and 25 local suppliers have been hit by the collapse.

A statement from the administrator said: “Directors explored all options in an effort to preserve trading and jobs. Regrettably, 38 jobs were lost as there is no prospect of continuing to trade.”

South of Scotland MSP Rachael Hamilton added: “This is a sad day for the Borders. Murray and Burrell did great work and it such a sadness that we hear this news.”
