The Qatari royal family’s property company has gained planning to convert the US Embassy in London’s Grosvenor Square into a luxury hotel.
Architect Sir David Chipperfield drew up the plan to redevelop the Mayfair embassy into a 137-room luxury hotel with spa and ballroom for 900 guests in the buildings three basement levels.
The client project team includes Buro Four as project manager, Gardiner & Theobald acting as QS and Hilson Moran delivering building services consultancy.
The developer will remove security bollards and fencing to open up public realm on the east side of Grosvenor Square
Qatari Diar had hoped to gain vacant possession of the building in February although that date may be put back because of delays construction the new US Embassy in Nine Elms.

Work was meant to finish in late 2016 but it is now scheduled for completion in spring 2017.

The US State Department agreed to sell the existing embassy building in 2009 to fund a relocation to the Nine Elms district, south of the Thames. The opening of the new embassy is scheduled to be completed next spring.
The Qatari group’s other projects include a luxury home development on the former Chelsea Barracks site and a majority stake in the Canary Wharf office and shopping complex.
