London Council unveils Wood Green regen plan

An ambitious plan to create a new town centre in North London’s Wood Green area has been unveiled by Haringey Council.

The council claims its plan could attract £3.5bn of investment if it gets off the ground, transforming the centre into a major shopping destination.

The plan relies on Wood Green getting a Crossrail 2 station, which is one of two route options being considered by Crossrail, with the alternative being a station at Turnpike Lane.

The council favour’s Wood Green as the best option for a Crossrail station as it underpins the redevelopment of the local area as shopping area with thousands of sq ft of retail, leisure and office space created and new workspace.

Wood Green regeneration plan

  • A major new public square around a new Wood Green Crossrail 2 station
  • Nearly 60,000 sq ft of new employment space, with more high-street shops
  • Redevelopment of The Mall shopping centre, Vue cinema, Arriva bus depot and other sites to create a better shopping and leisure destination
  • Transformed pedestrian and cycle routes to a restored Alexandra Palace and Hornsey
  • Boosting Wood Green’s cultural quarter and encouraging more tech and artisan start-up businesses to make the area their home

Haringey plans to go to public consultation on the 15-year redevelopment plan in March.

Cllr Joe Goldberg, Haringey Council Cabinet Member for Economic Development, Social Inclusion and Sustainability, said: “Wood Green is the heart of North London  and we have an ambitious plan to create almost 8,000 new homes and 4,000 jobs and restore one of the capital’s historic town centres based around a central Crossrail 2 station.

“We are working around the clock to deliver the changes our residents tell us they want to see in Wood Green.”
