Wates wins £21m Barrow submarine building training hub

Wates Construction is set to build BAE Systems’ new central training facility in Barrow, which will cater for around 1,000 apprentices.

The £21.3m build contract is the latest in a line of projects delivered by Wates on behalf of BAE Systems Submarines.

This includes the recent completion of the new Resolution Building – the first new build in the redevelopment programme to transform the Barrow shipyard.

Building work at the central training facility is expected to start later this month and will see Wates create a new teaching block complete with reception, classrooms and offices.

The development will also include a central ‘street’ with welfare facilities, craft workshops, changing rooms and a restaurant.

The new centre will provide training facilities for BAE Systems’ Successor Programme and is intended to boost the business’ existing submarine trade labour pool.

Phil Harrison, managing director of Wates Construction Midlands & North, said: “Having started my working life as a shipbuilding apprentice in Barrow, I take great pride in being a part of such an important development and I can personally attest to the difference that this significant investment will make to the careers of local people.”
