Bidding to start for £250m Leicestershire incinerator

Waste specialist Biffa is planning to go-ahead with plans to build a £250m waste incinerator near  the M1 in Leicestershire next year.

The firm is set to start tendering the 33MW project with a view to starting on site next year, sustaining around 300 construction jobs.

The firm was granted permission to develop a £250m complex at Newhurst Quarry, near Shepshed in 2012 but has had the project on hold design work was being finalised.

The project also includes a materials recovering facility with in vessel composting and restoration of quarry by controlled land filling including the reprofiling of the quarry void by blasting prior to land filling.

It is understood Biffa may work with US-based EfW developer Covanta on the facilities, which will burn350,000 tonnes of waste a year to provide enough to power for 66,000 homes.
