Castlefield 21-floor flats project approved

Manchester City Council has waved through a controversial plan to build 188 flats in two mid-rise buildings in a historic part of Castlefield.

Castlefield Developments (Manchester), part of the Renaker Build group, now plans to start work this year on a 21-storey block and a neighbouring 12-storey block next to the grade II-listed Congregation Chapel and grade II-listed viaduct.

The scheme at 2-4 Chester Road was designed by OMI Architects and is scheduled for completion by 2019.

The divisive project was originally expected to be determined in January, but councillors opted to defer making a decision to allow them to conduct a site visit first.

Plans include a swimming pool, a gym, a resident’s lounge, meeting rooms, a foyer, a basement car park with 166 spaces and a private landscaped terrace connecting the two blocks.

The vacant site earmarked for redevelopment, bounded by the Bridgewater Canal to the north and Chester Road to the south, was formerly occupied by Quay Bar until its demolition in 2007.
