EDF snaps up M&E contractor Imtech

French energy giant EDF has bought £400m turnover M&E contractor Imtech UK and Ireland to expand its business services in the UK.

The Imtech company will be swallowed up by EDF Energy Services, a new company formed two months in the UK by a joint venture between EDF Energy and the EDF Group’s Dalkia district heating arm.

The value of the deal remains secret with completion still subject to merger control clearance from the European Commission.

Private equity firm Endless salvaged the UK and Irish operations of Imtech in 2015 when its parent Dutch group Royal Imtech went into administration following heavy losses in Poland and Germany.

EDF said the existing Imtech management team would continue to lead the 2,100 staff strong business, which delivers mechanical and electrical engineering services, as well as management of facilities, and the integration of digital control solutions.

By combining the expertise of EDF Energy, Dalkia and Imtech, the French group hopes to offer innovative services for industrial and commercial facilities from initial design and build, operation and maintenance through to control of energy.

Vincent de Rivaz, CEO EDF Energy said: “As the UK’s leading generator of low carbon electricity and a major supplier to businesses, the addition of Imtech is a significant step in the development of energy services and low carbon solutions for our valued customers.

“This agreement is a key element of our strategy for long-term growth and investment, and a further demonstration of our commitment and support for British businesses and industries.

“We are delighted to welcome the 2,100 employees of Imtech. There is a close fit between the two businesses with our shared passion for safety, innovation, digital solutions and quality of service for customers.”

Paul Kavanagh CEO of Imtech UK and Ireland added: “The support of EDF Energy Services strengthens our capacity to continue to grow and build on our relationships with new and existing customers in the years ahead.

“By combining forces with EDF Energy Services, we have secured greater capability to respond to the future needs of our customers, and will be able to design and deliver innovative solutions.

“Endless has been a great owner of Imtech and I would like to thank them for all their support and input over the last two years.”
