UCL East starts race for £90m student rooms blocks

University College London has started the hunt for a contractor to deliver its Pool Street West student and college building at its planned new campus of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

Pool Street West makes up part of the first phase of UCL East, the largest single expansion of UCL since its foundation.

The two planned buildings, designed by architect Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands will will rise to 16 and 20 floors including a three storey podium tom house the Future Living Institute: a multi-disciplinary home for research, innovation, teaching, and engagement from at least five faculties.

This will feature a range of uses, including student accommodation, academic, retail, community and engagement uses.

Cost consultants have valued the design and build cost at around £90m.

Documents can be requested until 19 July and are available from the procurement site In-tend.

Construction of Phase 1 of UCL East will start in 2019, and will consist of over 50,000 sq m of development across two buildings together costing over £200m to build.

The other building, Marshgate 1, is presently out to bid with documents out to five firms: Bouygues, Laing O’Rourke, Lendlease, Mace and Sir Robert McAlpine.

A preferred contractor is due to be appointed under a pre-construction services agreement later this summer. Construction of Marshgate 1 expected to start in late spring of 2019.
