£40m Pontypridd scheme re-ignites after six-year hiatus

The Welsh Government has fired the starting gun on an ambitious scheme to regenerate part of Pontypridd.

It has confirmed that Transport for Wales and the operator of the South Wales Metro will be anchor tenants at the proposed redevelopment of the former Taff Vale shopping precinct.

The decision ignites the £40m project to redevelop the partially demolished site on Taff Street that has been an eyesore in the Valleys town after a proposed retail-led scheme fell through more than six years ago when the developer fell into receivership.

Demolition contractor Walters will now complete site clearance ahead of procurement starting for a new scheme consisting of three major buildings of around 130,000 sq ft, designed by architect Gaunt Francis.

Construction should start this autumn on the two office buildings. A third building will house a new library/leisure hub.
