A New York architect is floating designs for a striking hairpin-shaped tower next to central park that would stand out as the longest building in the world rather than one of the tallest.
Concepts for what is being called The Big Bend propose a slender arched structure that would measure 1.22km in length from end to end, effectively nearly double the height of towers like the Burj Khalifa.
It would straddle another building on Billionaire’s Row on 57th Street, creating a world-class structure that does not challenge the city’s height zoning regulations.
Ioannis Oikonomou, architect and founder of Oiio Studio said: “New York city’s zoning laws have created a peculiar set of tricks through which developers try to maximize their property’s height in order to infuse it with the prestige of a high rise structure”
“If we manage to bend our structure instead of bending the zoning rules of New York we would be able to create one of the most prestigious buildings in Manhattan.”
