Bid race for £50m new M11 Harlow junction

Essex County Council has started the hunt for a contractor to design and build its £50m new junction on the M11 to provide a vital link to Harlow.

The £50m project involves a new Junction 7a. This will comprise of a grade separated junction  connected by a new overbridge and new slip roads to the M11.

A new link road joining the M11 to the B183 in Harlow will also be included. The B183 or Gilden Way will be widened locally allowing access to the A414.

Due to the undulating landscape there will be extensive earthworks with the new roads connecting the new Junction rising on an embankment to the M11.

The average elevation will be 5-6m above local ground level, increasing to a maximum of 9m.

Construction is expected to start in June 2019 and take two years to complete.

Highways England acknowledges that Junction 7 is already over capacity, with drivers experiencing significant congestion, and has committed to improving the junction as part of the Road Investment Strategy 2015-2020.

Interested firms have until 8 August to complete prequal documents with five firms due to be invited to tender in November.

To express an interest visit the BiP tendering portal.
